n Aug. 16, Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP)OLIVAS hosted its annual Night in Oaxaca at Olivas Adobe in Ventura. This celebration of Oaxacan culture featured traditional music and dance as well as a delicious dinner made up of dishes with origins in the SouthernMexico state, prepared by local restaurants specializing in Oaxacan cuisine.The occasion is also marked by the awarding of college scholarships to Ventura County students who are of indigenous Mexican descent from the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero. mixteco.org
1. Masked dancers from Los Eligidos de Asis close out the program with the Dance of the Devils from the Mixteca region. 2. The Flor Bonita dance group performed “Baile de las Piñas,” a traditional dance from the Tuxtepec region.. 3. This year, MICOP was able to award 29 scholarships to indigenous youth from its Tequio Scholarship Fund. 4. Las Chinas Oaxaqueñas, Las Isabelas opened the ceremonies with a dance traditional to the central valleys of Oaxaca.
