n Dec. 5, the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks held its VIP reception for the exhibit Kevin Sloan: Collection of Rarities. In addition to presenting Sloanís extraordinary, eco-conscious art, the reception also served as a grand-opening celebration for CMATO, which took the opportunity to show off its new space at The Oaks mall, where it relocated in the fall. Guests took in colorful works of surreal beauty, as well as a display of poignant prayer flags created by community members in the aftermath of the Borderline tragedy and the Woolsey Fire. Local poets (Steven Braff, Marsha de la O, and Ventura County Poet Laureate Phil Taggart) also read poems inspired by Sloanís work. This was more than a show opener: it was a celebration of art, inspiration, life and community rolled into one.
