Hollywood hits Ojai

Sandra Oh (of Grey’s Anatomy and Sideways fame) and Neil Patrick Harris (best known for his stint as TV’s Doogie Howser) were just two of the stellar actors who took to the stage on January 20th to help the Ojai Playwrights Conference celebrate their 10th Anniversary Gala. The annual event is the Conference’s biggest fundraiser and many talented and well-respected theater people (and theater lovers) were on hand to help the organization commemorate 10 impressive years. The performances at the Matilija Junior High Auditorium were surprisingly engaging and developed, despite the lack of sets, costumes and movement. (The actors performed dramatic readings of either short plays or scenes from longer plays.) Spoken word by Sekou (tha misfit) and a story by Charlayne Woodard were some of the most impressive pieces from the evening. Spirits were high and all the laughs, sighs and tears provoked by the strong acting (and stellar writing) proved that the Ojai Playwrights Conference is a show that must go on.

Warmth against the chill

Art warmed the heart of the 350 people who turned out for the Ventura County Museum of History & Art’s Splendors of the Season Gala on a chill winter’s night. The event, held Dec. 1, 2006, featured gorgeous treasures from Fox Fine Jewelry and delicious chocolates from Trufflehound’s Fine Chocolate. As part of the festivities, guests previewed the new exhibition of art by Cornelius Botke, his wife Jesse Arms Botke and their granddaughter Kitty Botke. Kitty and Kay were on hand to sample the sumptuous dinner and to view the family paintings.
